Your budding baker will be guided by one of our cookery school chefs as they make homemade spiced apple scones decorated with a cross for Easter. Learn techniques like crumbing, shaping, simple knife skills and piping. These are a really lovely treat for Easter, with all the flavours of hot cross buns.

Parental supervision may be required for:

Shopping list (makes 12-16 scones)

Fruit & Veg - Prepare ahead by washing fruit

  • 2 small eating apples, Braeburn or Cox, peeled, cut into quarters and cored
  • 1 orange


  • 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 200ml milk

Store cupboard

  • 400g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground mixed spice
  • 100g dried mixed fruit
  • 85g light brown muscovado sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or paste
  • 1 medium egg

For the crosses and to decorate

  • 85g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 2 tsp golden syrup


  • Small saucepan to heat milk or use the microwave
  • 2 baking trays
  • Measuring jug for water
  • Kettle for boiling water
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 2 small mixing bowls
  • Small bowl for dusting flour
  • Chopping board
  • Small knife to cut apples
  • Zester or fine side of a box grater
  • Sieve
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spoons for stirring glaze and crosses
  • 1 fork
  • Round bladed knife
  • 6cm round straight sided cutter
  • Piping bag
  • Pastry brush
  • Scissors
